A wonderful contribution from ChallahCrumbs:

Here’s a great project to do at home before Chanukah!

Here’s what you’ll need:

Materials:
5 pounds of fresh olives
Hammers, mallets
Large plastic bowls
Cheese cloth (or an old t-shirt!)

Directions:

1. Using hammers or mallets, crush the olives, including the pits into a large plastic bowl. If you want a project for little hands to do, have your younger children remove the pits after the olives are cracked open.

(If your blender can handle olive pits, you can crush up the olives in the blender.)

2. Mix up the paste for 10-15 minutes. Apply heat to this step by popping your paste into the microwave for 15-30 seconds or adding some hot (not boiling) water.

3. At this point you will see that your paste is becoming shiny. Hello olive oil! Smush your paste though some cheese cloth (or an old undershirt) and the oil will drip out.
