While the Medieval period is often associated with the Black Plague, claiming about 75 million lives, the “Middle Ages,” as it also has been referred to, was a time filled with intellectual curiosity, the expansion of religious ideas, and an increased interest in Greek and Roman art, literature, and philosophy. Within Judaism, various commentaries and interpretations related to the Hebrew Bible and Jewish law emerged, including that of individuals such as Rashi and Maimonides. Furthermore, because Jews had become spread out throughout the Diaspora, differences in customs and practices emerged within different Jewish communities.
