Lesson Summary:

This is one of four lessons in a set of lesson plans that draws from the PBS series,THE JEWISH AMERICANS, that explores immigration, identity, contribution, assimilation, discrimination, change, and confrontation. The plans may be used for a deeper examination of the ways Jewish life fits into U.S. history. The set may also frame comparative research of non-Jewish immigrant experiences.

  • examine notions of individual identity and the intersecting categories that shape identity;
  • understand connections between broad historical events and individuals/groups who respond to, and further influence, historical events.
  • reflect on the immigration experiences for Jews and on the experiences of other immigrants to the United States

Be Inspired:The ideas included are offered as starting points as you and your students explore, discover and live the lessons. Be sure to elicit and encourage student and parent participation, consistently reinforcing the value being addressed. Allow lessons to authentically develop and change based on engagement and interests.
