The Jewish Americans: The Talk Show

Lesson Summary:

This is one of four lessons in a set of lesson plans that draws from the PBS series,THE JEWISH AMERICANS, that explores immigration, identity, contribution, assimilation, discrimination, change, and confrontation. The plans may be used for a deeper examination of the ways Jewish life fits into U.S. history. The set may also frame comparative research of non-Jewish immigrant experiences.



Objectives

During this lesson, students will:

  • examine notions of individual identity and the intersecting categories that shape identity; consider prejudice and discrimination;
  • explore and understand the diversity of immigration experiences reflected in the classroom;
  • summarize and reflect on central ideas contained in THE JEWISH AMERICANS

Be Inspired:The ideas included are offered as starting points as you and your students explore, discover and live the lessons. Be sure to elicit and encourage student and parent participation, consistently reinforcing the value being addressed. Allow lessons to authentically develop and change based on engagement and interests.
