HISTORY
The Mid-Modern period gave rise to a number of revolutionary movements throughout the world, including that of the Americas, and a drastic change in government structure, shifting from a monarchy to democracy. Even though Western European Jewry thrived in many respects, the Jews of Eastern Europe continued to be ostracized in Russia and the surrounding areas. Poor living conditions and treatment from government officials led to an increased effort to retain Jewish tradition, the only link of continuity. Many Eastern European Jews began to flee to America, seeking freedom and prosperity.
