Think-Pair-Share is demonstrated as students listen to a story and reflect on teacher questions. Notice how the teacher prepares students for using the strategy in terms of classroom management.


Think-Pair-Share is a cooperative discussion activity that involves students in a give topic and requires a high degree of student response. A question is posed to the entire class but each student must generate a response. This is an effective strategy that requires little preparation time but creates a high degree of motivation.
1 Think

• Teacher provokes students’ thinking with a prompt, question, or observation. 
• Individually, students think about an answer to the question.

2 Pair

• Assign discussion partners in teams of two or four. Smaller groups invite greater student interaction. 
• Each discusses the answer he/she came up with. Select the best, most convincing, or most unique answer.

3 Share

• Teacher calls upon pairs to share their thinking with the entire class, using either a round-robin approach or randomly calling on pairs. 
• Responses are recorded on the board.
