Lesson Summary:

From the Institute for Curriculum Services, this lesson plan provides an overview to symbols and places that are important to Jews and Judaism- it could serve as an introduction or a review, depending upon the prior knowledge of your community:

"This activity uses colorful images to reinforce and enrich student understanding of Judaism. Students tour a photo gallery of places and objects that are important to Jews and Judaism. Each image is accompanied by a brief explanation and a question that requires active thinking".


  • Students will be able to identify the significance of various objects and places to Judaism.


  • Students will be able to identify and explain the following items and places: Torah Ark, Shabbat Candlestick Holders, Ancient Synagogue, Tzedakah Box, The Talmud, Jewish Community Centers, Synagogues, The Western Wall, Jerusalem in Art, Passover Seder Plates, The Torah 

Be Inspired:The ideas included are offered as starting points as you and your students explore, discover and live the lessons. Be sure to elicit and encourage student and parent participation, consistently reinforcing the value being addressed. Allow lessons to authentically develop and change based on engagement and interests.
